PJSC "Slavneft-YANOS" has produced the first commercial batch of Arctic diesel fuel

A unique feature of the fuel is its exceptional properties - application temperature down to -65° C. It will be used in military and special equipment in the Arctic and can also be used in Antarctic conditions.

The problem of the lack of diesel fuel with the required temperature characteristics has been an acute problem for the RF Ministry of Defense in recent years. This is due to the ambitious goals of our country to develop the coast of the Arctic Ocean and establish shipping along the Northern Sea Route. The study of Antarctica is an equally important task. To solve these problems, it was necessary to create a recipe for a special type of fuel. The current standards assumed the release of diesel fuel with a temperature of use up to -52 ° C which is not enough for a harsh polar winter. In addition, in the process of using fuel in accordance with this GOST, disadvantages were identified associated with the use of depressants - components that can improve low-temperature properties. However, during storage, they provoke delamination of the fuel which leads to a deterioration in the properties of its lower layer.
In 2014, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation identified the need for Arctic diesel fuel and sent a standard for a new type of fuel to domestic refineries, in which, in addition to the required low-temperature characteristics, there was a requirement to preserve its operational properties for five years.
In 2018, PJSC “Slavneft-YANOS” developed a unique technology for the production of Arctic diesel fuel in accordance with the requirements of the military department. In 2019, the LCh-24/7 unit produced the first pilot batch of Arctic diesel fuel the samples of which were submitted for testing at the Federal Autonomous Organization “25th State Research Institute of Chemotology of the Russian Ministry of Defense”, the head organization of the Ministry of Defense for testing fuels. Work on the creation of the product was completed in 2020 when YANOS received a Decision on the use of diesel fuel in armaments, military and special equipment for the Arctic zone.
- The arctic diesel fuel produced by our enterprise with application temperatures down to -65°С has advantages compared to jet fuel in a number of low-temperature indicators which has a crystallization start temperature of no higher than -60 ° С. The appearance of such a high quality product will increase the use of diesel engines in the far north which will certainly drive demand for this type of fuel. Thus, Russian companies that use this type of fuel in their equipment during exploration have every chance of becoming the leading developers of the Arctic shelf. The release of such diesel fuel is the result of painstaking research work and a great success of the entire team of the enterprise, - emphasized Nikolay Karpov, General Director of PJSC “Slavneft-YANOS”.
